2023 RMSPGA YOUTH PLAYER DEVELOPMENT AWARD HONOREE IS KATIE SOMERS

Katie Somers, the PGA Director of Instruction at River Birch Golf Course in Star, Idaho, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Youth Player Development Award for the Rocky Mountain Section PGA.  Somers has been a member of the PGA of America since 2018 and has had her hands involved in junior golf during every step of her still young career.

The Youth Player Development Award bestows special recognition upon a PGA Professional who has displayed extraordinary and exemplary contribution and achievement in this field.  Somers is especially proud of her involvement with the Idaho Junior Golf Foundation where she has been a board member since 2016.  The foundation has raised more than $120,000 in 2023 to help junior golf programs across the state.  Moneys are dedicated to everything junior golf including new equipment for school programs, subsidization for Youth on Course programs, and financial aid to deserving children.

Teaching, especially kids, is Katie’s life.  She tirelessly promotes the game offering various programs, clinics, and academies to meet any student’s needs.  She teaches responsibility, integrity, and most importantly, fun!  Somers is so very proud of all her students that embrace the game, whether they choose to be competitive players or just want to enjoy a nice day outside.  Golf is for everyone and Katie loves to share the joy of the game through her instruction.

This is the first time Somers has been recognized as the Youth Player Development Award winner, and her eighth overall Section honor having won the Assistant Professional of the Year Award in 2017 and six consecutive Women’s Player of the Year Awards from 2018-2023. She will be presented with the 2023 RMSPGA Youth Player Development Award next May at the Section Annual Meeting and Awards presentation.
