Two days… Two rounds… Crazy weather… The Rocky Mountain Section PGA Junior Championship contested at Preston (Idaho) Golf & Country Club is in the books and we have our 2020 Champions. Day 1 was over 90 degrees and not a breath of wind which lead to good scoring and a tight bunch at the top of both the Boys’ and Girls’ leaderboards. Day 2, however, was another thing altogether. Mother Nature dumped 25 degrees and added gusty winds and a little bit of occasional drizzle to separate the field and challenge our competitors.
Age clearly didn’t matter to 14-year-old Wheaton Ennis from Eagle, ID. Ennis had the low round both days firing 69-70=139, finishing 3-under-par to earn the title. Finishing at even-par, was Hunter Eberhardt from Boise, ID, and alone in third place was Quinn Haigwood, also from Boise, who shot 1-over-par 143.
The Girls needed an extra hole to identify their champion and her name is Gabrielle McCord from Star, ID. Her two-round total of 3-over-par, 145, was good enough to get in to a playoff with Samantha Yates from Bozeman, MT. They each had 15 footers for birdie on the first par-4 playoff hole and Ms. McCord buried her chance to win the title. Alone in third place was Christine Cho from Eagle, ID, who finished one shot behind.
The Rocky Mountain Section PGA would like to express its most sincere thanks to Preston (Idaho) Golf & Country Club’s host PGA Professional John Van Vleet and his staff for taking excellent care of us all at this year’s Section Junior Championship.
